I welcome the Borough Council’s Young and Active brochure detailing the many activities going on across Fylde during the summer holidays. It can be downloaded from www.fylde.gov.uk/youth or www.fylde.gov.uk/sport . Copies are being sent out to all primary and high schools, libraries, young peoples service and police stations across Fylde. Young and Active Fylde
I was pleased to be invited to St. Anne’s College Grammar School on Friday to select the winning entries and award prizes at the school’s Inventors Day. The school had adopted the Wallace and Gromit theme of ‘The Wrong Trousers’ to add some colour and humour to the day. I was good to witness the children’s inventiveness and their ability to solve design problems.
I am pleased that a new lease has been approved so that Trax can develop their plans to bring beach related sports activities back to St. Anne’s beach. Whilst there will be a need for a strict safety regime in connection with any sporting activity in that area, I hope to see sand yachting back amongst us very soon. I hope that the ruling group on Fylde Borough Council will agree to retain the much-needed car park adjacent to the site and not sell it off to fund Town Hall redevelopments as was originally planned.
Yes that infamous junction can boast yet another accident - this time early Friday morning. Despite new signs being painted on the road this junction really is becoming an accidnt ‘black spot’.
LCC Highways have had new lines painted and illuminated stop signs are being erected but they haven’t consulted with local residents or ward councillors regarding changes to this junction. Cllr. Howard Henshaw and I have been campaigning for improvements to the junction and made suggestions but we’ve not been consulted. Local business people also have some valuable suggestions to make about making the junction safer but they too haven’t been approached or contacted.
Yesterday I gave the Werne delegation a tour of St. Anne’s based on the Town Trail, which is currently being updated and revised by the Civic Society. Our
German visitors were intrigued to learn so much about the Town’s history and they enjoyed looking at its architecture. Several members of the group visited St. Anne’s a few years ago prior to the improvements to the Square and were very impressed with the changes that have been made.
Once again beer featured in the day’s events when they all sampled the new ‘Twinning ‘ Beer which had just gone on sale at the No. 15 in St. Anne’s Square at the end of the tour.
On Friday I enjoyed a great day out with our German guests visiting Lytham Hall, The Art Gallery at Booths, Lytham Heritage Centre and the Windmill. However according to our Twinning visitors the trip to Lytham Brewery seems to be the highlight of the day when they sampled a new beer prepared and brewed in honour of the Twinning Association by Lytham Brewery. The beer goes on sale from Saturday.
Tonight I shall be welcoming a party of 18 visitors from Werne in Germany who have come to celebrate 25 years of twinning activities between Lytham St. Annes and Werne. The group begin their weekend with a tour of Lytham and St St Anne’s in a vintage bus , taking in various sites and culminating in a visit to Lytham’s very own brewery. Later in the evening they will guests at a Welcome Party at St. Anne’s Cricket Club. Amongst the delegation are two journalists and the Twinning Association hopes that links between the newspapers in the respective towns can become a regular media feature.
On Saturday the group will be taking a guided tour along the St Annes Town Trail finishing with a Jacob’s Join’ lunch. On Sunday the 18 strong party will be guests at a Civic Lunch before returning to Germany later in the day.
Last week I was very pleased to welcome students from Werne in Germany who are visiting Lytham St. Anne’s. Werne has been ‘twinned’ with Lytham St Anne’s for almost 25 years. As a member of the newly revived Twinning Association it was good to meet up with some of Werne’s younger residents and to chat with Horst Zühlke who will be visiting St Anne’s later this month as part of the Werne delegation celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Twinning Charter.
